Awesome read and well done for first times out!

Awesome, great job! Moving to racing is something I intend to do sooner or later, but still need to get faster.

I’ve done a ton of track days, but hit a wall as far as improvement lately. Have you found that simply being in a race causes you to go faster?

Nice! I love the SV, I need to clean her up and check fluids this weekend. She has been sitting for too long.

The first thing I would say is: I can almost promise you don’t need to go faster to start. There are people of a wide range of skill levels out there. I was super nervous about that too! To answer your question: Ab-so-freakin-lutely. Over the 2 race days I have done, both times I felt like I improved more in that day than I had over the last year of track days. It really is amazing and it just sort of happens. You get in behind someone just a little faster than you and they just sort of drag you along and teach you. Then at some point you figure “Well if I just brake a little later/accelerate a little earlier/flick the bike a little faster I’ll go a little bit faster than him. And it has to be possible because there are people smoking both of us right now!”.

Thanks, it was a lot of fun! I just hope I didn’t totally butcher the mechanics of the English language. That was not my specialty back in school haha.

Yep that’s pretty much what I was thinking. Right now I’m mid-pack in the intermediate group of the trackday org that I ride with. Usually, I smoke the n00bs that are recently bumped, while getting smoked by the people ready to get bumped to the advanced group.

My lap times are very consistent though.

Safety is the biggest thing they want to see so if you are consistent they will be happy :). And you should be plenty fast. For some contex the fastest lap in my last race by the winner was a 1:22.1, I did a 1:26.9 (isn’t that depressing), and the slowest was a 1:32.7. So a literal 10 second difference across the field. What bike do you ride?

Exactly, gotta be safe to pass. Sounds like you were moving pretty good!

I have an older ZX-10. According to my math I’m about 5 seconds off the race pace for the two main tracks I ride at, so there’s plenty of time to be made up. The majority of blame goes to me, but also my bike has worn out stock suspension and I’m only on Q3s, haven’t made the move to race tires yet.

Kawi bros! What tracks do you run at? Its kinda funny I have to use DOT tires per the rules but they are basically just full on race tires with a couple small grooves cut in. I know that not knowing when your suspension oil was last changed is race bike sin #1 but I haven’t had it changed since I got the bike. Whoops haha. I’m hoping to find someone I can trust and get that done after this weekend before the race next month.

I’m usually at either PittRace or Summit Point, but occasionally make the trip to VIR.

Excellent write up and great videos...but what happened to the downed rider? His leg looks to be at an...unnatural angle.

Thanks! I’m really not sure actually. I didn’t hear any horror story rumors floating around so I’m hoping he or she wasn’t in too bad of shape.

I bet you’re loving the new track surface after starting off on this - ha!

That is the new surface! It was done before I moved to Tulsa this May (right?). Now after being to eagle canyon I appreciate any surface that isn’t full of 1” pavement changes and covered in tire snakes and patches. Or really any paved course of a higher quality than a dirt road.

Ah, I guess you’re right. Surprised there are so many patches already... I haven’t been on track out there this year, but went with a group at the end of 2014 after they redid it (so much improved over the old surface). I really do love Hallett - awesome to have it just an hour away.

Some of those patches are actually just wet spots from the track weeping in the sun (it rained the night before / early morning). Hallett is great, but half the motorcycle track days end up being on the same weekend as the cmra races so I can’t always go get practice in between rounds. Also the cmra won’t run the track clockwise for safety reasons. It would be nice varoety if they would run it both ways. Not that I blame them, the wall can be close in spots. Going counter clockwise at the last race 2 people made contact, then hit the wall going off wide in 4 and ended up flipping over it and getting pretty hurt. Nothing life threatening but enough to spend a week or two in the hospital. That’s one thing I really like about MSR cresson, there are miles of grass and runoff everywhere.

Good points. I’ve run Hallett both ways, and it is fun to experience it a different way. I've also been out on MSR-Cresson before. Great facility - hope to run the full circuit some day.
